Steven A. Kooperman, MDDr. Steven A. Kooperman

Steven Kooperman received his BS degree in biology from the University of Illinois at Champaign, and went on to study medicine at Rush Medical College in Chicago.  After receiving his MD degree in 1981, he completed his residency at the University Of Florida College Of Medicine.  Here, he held the honor of being appointed Administrative Chief Resident.

After residency, he served as Director of Undergraduate Medical Education for the University of Illinois at Lutheran General Hospital for the next two years.  At that time, he also became a member of the medical staff at Northwest Community Hospital.  Here he served as a member of the Quality Assurance Committee, which governs the practice of physicians.  He was elected as the head of this body, and department of OB/Gyne Vice-Chairman.  He served in this capacity until being elected Chairman of the Department.  Since his chairmanship, Dr. Kooperman has been an active member of the steering committee, which directs all activity in the department of OB/Gyn . 

Dr. Kooperman has had an extensive history as being a cutting edge physician.  He was the first to introduce vacuum extraction delivery as an alternative to forceps delivery at Lutheran General Hospital.  He appeared on The Jenny Jones TV show to discuss the how doctors manage both their professional and family lives .  He headed and developed The Resolve Through Sharing program, which comforts mothers and families when pregnancies results in loss and grief.  He has had a vital role in the development of advanced laparoscopic surgery at Northwest Community Hospital and recently has led the department to evaluate the use of robotic surgery for gynecologic conditions.  

Most recently, Dr. Kooperman has created an annual new technology conference attended by all the sub-specialties of our hospital.  This conference allows doctors of different specialties to understand the newest technologies available throughout our hospital. 

Dr. Kooperman's outgoing personality and medical expertise have put him in the spotlight as a featured guest speaker for numerous television programs, medical groups and women's organizations.  Dr. Kooperman is proud of his wife Paula, who is a fitness instructor and also has actively been involved in the fight against breast cancer.  She has helped to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for this worthwhile cause over the last few years.  Dr. Kooperman is also proud of his two sons.  His older son is studying for a career in the legal profession, while his younger son recently was accepted to medical school and looks forward to a career in pediatric oncology.
